Viareggio – Holidays in Tuscany

The seaside resort of Tuscany!

The city of Viareggio

Viareggio is a well-known seaside resort on the Tuscan coast. The town is part of the province of Lucca and has a total of more than 60,000 inhabitants. Viareggio is a wonderful destination for anyone who wants to enjoy a well-deserved beach holiday. The beach is located on the Ligurian sea and is known for its wide sandy beaches. This makes Viareggio one of the best destinations in Tuscany! Viareggio itself has less visible history than other Tuscan cities; the city has always been a real port city. On the other hand, in Viareggio you will find the long sandy beaches and the long boulevard with its many boutiques and restaurants. These are the highlights of Viareggio:

Our tips

If you are going to visit Viareggio, we have some tips to help make this holiday unforgettable!

Stroll along the boulevard

La Passeggiate of Viareggio. This boulevard is no less than 1.5 km long and well equipped with boutiques, bars, restaurants and ice cream parlors.

You’re in the right place if you enjoy shopping. You can find luxury brands such as Gucci and Guess here, but also local, often smaller, boutiques.

Also turn into a side street for more local shops!

Enjoy the beach

From the boulevard you can also access the paid beaches with the beach bars for an unprecedented luxury beach day.

But you can also enjoy the free beach close to the campsite. You are just a 20-minute walk away on the beautiful sandy beach. It costs nothing and is therefore less beautiful than the paid beaches.

Sellers (we also call them ‘walkers’) regularly come by with all kinds of things to sell; bags, sunglasses and self-cooled drinks. You can and may of course buy, but if you don’t want to, ignore or say a clear “No, grazie!” usually enough to keep them running.

Go cycling!

In Viareggio, but also at the campsite, you can easily rent a bike to enjoy a nice day out. Please visit Torre del Lago Puccini by bike and visit theGran Teatro Puccini for a nice performance. Or take the boat across and visit the archaeological excavations Massaciuccoli.

Food nearby

If you say Italy, you say good Mediterranean food. Pizza and Pasta, but also bean dishes and fresh fish of course; it is Tuscany on the coast after all!

You can also enjoy good food on the boulevard. Make sure to check where the local population is; there it is good food!

Tasty Italian ice cream is of course also included. Get some really tasty gelato at Gelateria Mario (there is a branch near the campsite!).

Another tip if you like fish: at the beginning of the boulevard, towards the harbor and the long pier to the mouth of the harbor, there is always one fishing boat where you can buy the most delicious Fritto misto. Recommended!

Restaurants to visit for a fun evening and real Italian food? We know from our own experience that you can eat deliciously in Italy. Atil Fiaschetto (near Viareggio in Torre del Lago) you can enjoy delicious authentic Italian dining. Lovely outside, right on the water you can enjoy typical Tuscan food; salami, prosciutto, fresh pasta, bean dishes and delicious desserts. And everything is homemade!

If you are a lover of fresh fish, you can go to Fronte del Porto. This small fish restaurant is located near the harbor in Viareggio where you can enjoy delicious fish dishes!

Ideal base

From Viareggio you can easily reach the famous cities such as Pisa, Florence, Luca, Pistoia and of course to visit Cinque Terre. Take the car for this, but don’t forget to look at the train as a possible means of transport. That in turn saves parking costs!
